Mapu.ca is a curated set of pins, organisations, and stories submitted and approved by Indigenous community partners. It operates under Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles and the Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels framework.
Indigenous Data Sovereignty
Indigenous Data Sovereignty means that Indigenous communities decide what is collected, how it is used, who can access it, and when something should be withdrawn. Mapu.ca is built around that principle. Sacred sites, ceremonial places, and culturally sensitive locations are never published with precise coordinates. Community partners hold the right to remove content at any time, for any reason, without justification to Map.ca.
Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels
TK Labels are a vocabulary developed by Local Contexts that lets communities attach context, attribution, and use conditions to digital records of Traditional Knowledge. We display the relevant TK Label set on each Mapu.ca pin so anyone viewing the pin sees the conditions under which the community has chosen to share it.
